The Kik Plateau is high open ground at around 1,700m, running between Asni and Ouirgane. A dirt road runs its full length with the entire High Atlas laid out along one side and the Marrakech plain dropping away on the other. It is over 20km of fast, rolling, largely traffic-free riding.
When we are asked for the single best trail near Marrakech for flow and scenery rather than for technical difficulty, this is the answer, and it has been for years. Nothing else this close to the city gives you that much view for that little technical demand.
The climb onto the plateau is the work of the day — steady and exposed, with no shade to hide in. The riding on top is the reward, and the descent to Asni at the end is fast on loose gravel.
The surface is hard-packed dirt road rather than singletrack, so the plateau does not demand a mountain bike. Our 2-day High Atlas gravel tour spends its second day up here on 45mm tyres. The 3-day and 8-day MTB trips cross it, and the 6-day e-bike tour rides it with the assistance making the approach climb a non-event.
That flexibility is why it is where most first-timers go. Someone who has never ridden off-road can have a genuinely good day here, and a strong rider can still work hard on the same ground by riding it faster.
It is not a road-bike route — the surface is loose in places and there are sections of rougher piste — but almost everything else with reasonable tyres will do.
At 1,700m the plateau sits below the snow line for most of the winter, so it keeps running when routes built around Oukaimeden or the Tizi n'Tamatert cannot. February and early March are particularly good: green after the winter rain, rivers running, and daytime temperatures in the high teens or low twenties.
Spring and autumn are the obvious windows, for the same reasons as everywhere else here — climbable temperatures and a dry, fast surface.
The exposure cuts both ways. There is no shelter on the plateau, so wind matters more than it does in the valleys, and in high summer the lack of shade makes an early start non-negotiable.
Not really. The surface is hard-packed dirt with loose and rougher sections, so a road bike on 28mm tyres will have an uncomfortable day. A gravel bike on 40–45mm, a mountain bike or an e-bike all work well.
Over 20km along the top, and the days we build around it run 60km or so in total once the approach and the descent to Asni are included. Reckon on four to five hours of riding with a lunch stop.
It is the best one near Marrakech. Nothing technical is forced on you, the climbing is steady rather than steep, and the scenery does the work. Most people riding off-road for the first time with us go here.
Usually yes. At 1,700m it sits below the snow line most winters, which is why it and the Agafay carry the season when the high passes are closed. Cold mornings and wind are the things to plan for, not snow.
